The Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022 came into full effect on 31 March 2022, requiring mine operators to ensure all nominated first aid officers have adequate training for remote emergency management. If your site's first aid plan hasn't been reviewed since 2022, it's overdue.

First Aider Ratios for WA Mine Sites

Mining operations in WA fall firmly into the remote high-risk category under the WorkSafe WA First Aid Code of Practice, requiring a minimum of 1 trained first aider per 10 workers as a starting point — with coverage maintained at all times across all shifts.

Most major WA operators including BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue, and Roy Hill set their own standards that exceed the Code minimum. Always check your principal contractor's specific site requirements.

What's the difference between HLTAID013 and HLTSS00068?
HLTAID013 covers first aid specifically for remote or isolated sites — extended patient management when help is hours away. HLTSS00068 is the full occupational skill set that combines advanced first aid, oxygen therapy, advanced resuscitation, and first aid systems management. Most sites require HLTAID013 for general first aiders and HLTSS00068 for designated occupational first aid officers.
How often do mine site first aid certificates need renewing?
